Boy Howdy!

I'm new here and so glad I found you all. I'm 42, want to take up cello for my own pleasure. The rub is, I'm not a big classical music freak...I grew up listening to Dylan, The Who, Talking Heads, Ramones, etc.. I'm still into the "rock" stuff. I find that on the internet and in music stores, I run into cello snobs and it just turns me off! If anyone knows of an open-minded teacher in southern California ( pref. in the Pasadena area ) please let me know. Thanks for being there!!
Trudy
ps. I can play guitar and read for piano.

Pasadena Conservatory of Music

Hi Trudy,

I grew up in Pasadena and for several years took cello lessons at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music (at 100 N. Hill Ave). They appear to specialize in the Suzuki method, which trains you to play by ear--but that's a valuable skill for any non-classical style, I think. The method itself is designed for children (and their parents), but there were a few beginner adults too when I was there. In any case, you could contact them (http://www.pasadenaconservatory.org/) to find out if any of the cello teachers would be compatible with your personal goals, or if they can recommend someone.

Sincerely,
- Jill

New Guy Here!

Hello everyone,

My name is Mike and I just joined. I found out about this through Lindsay Mac, whose show I attended when she passed through San Diego just prior to this year's NDCF in Sacramento.

My preferred styles of music are progressive rock, classic rock, blues and some jazz (not smooth). While I've had some formal instruction, most of my skills were acquired by jamming with records and CDs. Groups like Electric Light Orchestra (early era), Queen, Spock's Beard, Yes, etc. While other guys were messing with Fender Strats, I had my trusty cello.

So yeah, I can read music and I know some theory, but prefer to jam!

I've been doing studio sessions and live gigs in the Southern California area, mainly for fun and a little gas money. I've done the classical thing at a couple of weddings, but those weren't quite so satisfying.

My current project is The Bass Clef Experiment, a duo consisting of myself and a fretless bassist. We sometimes use percussion loops. We have a site at www.myspace.com/bassclefx in case anyone's interested. I also have a solo myspace page at www.myspace.com/cellojammer. Sound samples are at both of them.

Well, it's good to be here! This looks like a good place to exchange some cello thoughts.

Mike
