E String?

Hey, does anybody out there know what string I can use to get an E string on my cello? I went to a lot of websites that sold electric cellos with 5 or even 6 strings, but I didn't see anything about them selling E or F strings.

good question!! I have been trying to do this too.- have thought about stringing an extra cello like an octave fiddle so I can play fiddle tunes without having to get into crazy fingerings. I communicated directly with the tech guy at Thomastik ( or at least someone there who knew English) - he said he didn't know how to do that. Maybe a viol string?

Maybe the companies that make 5 string cellos know something we don't.... anyway if you find anything ,please post it !

greetings! i recently had an electric 5-string cello built for me, so i have been wondering about e-strings too... just researched a little online and it seems like instrument builder ned steinberger sells them from his web site...look under "list prices" for "accessories"

my friend who built my cello says that there is an e-string of the Supersensitive (?) brand but he really didn't think it was any good...

Thanks so much for the info, I'll do a little looking. My instructor thinks that Viol d' Gamba strings might fill the bill as well, he is looking in to that one as well. Congratulations on commissioning a 5-stringer! I really want an acoustic 5-string myself, that extra bit of range would just be fabulous.

E String

My cello is a 5-String. I've been able to purchase E strings fairly easily from both Ifshin Violins and Cellos 2 Go. The only "problem" has been that these are a special order item, so I've had to pre-pay and wait several weeks for delivery. Since finding a replacement can be a bit of a chore, I usually order two at a time. Currently I have a set (5) of Stellars (by Supersensitive) on my instrument. I like them very much. I also have a set of Spirocores (I forget who makes them)which I've yet to use. Good luck!

I have been researching this as well and heard recently that you can get a good low e guitar string that will work. Try it and see, I haven't done so myself but I'm dying to get a 6-string electric cello soon and will need some advice soon as well. Good luck!

If you use a guitar e-string wouldn't there be a problem with the rosin gripping it.
