Invert (2-cello string quartet) April 21, Brooklyn, NY

Invert, the “upside down” string quartet featuring cellists Steven Berson and Chris George, violinist Helen Yee, and violist Chris Jenkins, will be performing at Issue Project Room in Brooklyn, New York on April 21, 2007 to kick-off the release of their new full length third CD. Entitled “The Strange Parade,” Invert’s latest release is a fresh departure, even for this already alternative string quartet. The CD includes fifteen pieces that showcase Invert’s distinctive mix of compositions and improvisations by members of the band, and their own arrangement of Japanese composer Shigeru Umebayashi’s “Yumeji’s Theme.” What sets “The Strange Parade” apart from their previous recordings is the inclusion of two cuts that feature Roberto Juan Rodriguez on drums. Invert’s often groove-driven music gets an extra rhythmic boost from Rodriguez (who has performed with Joe Jackson, Paul Simon, Paquito D’Rivera, Ruben Blades and Marc Ribot among numerous others) on the songs “Dog Days” and “The Peak.”

Scottish Harp and Cello Festival

Scottish traditional music.

Classes, workshops a concert and ceilidh.
The festival is being held in Milngavie, near Glasgow, Scotland on the weekend of February 24th - 25th 2007.

For cello there will be classes at 3 different levels, all taught by ear and covering Scottish tunes, accompaniment techniques and improvisation. There will also be opportunities to play with the harpers.

Cello tutors are Seylan Baxter and Patricia Strain.

Cellists Together in Casalmaggiore - September 2007

I am pleased to inform that the City of Casalmaggiore, in Northern Italy, organizes a one-week workshop dedicated to cellists only, from Monday, September 3rd to Friday, September 7th, 2007. It will be directed by Maestro Rudolf Weinsheimer, formerly cellist of the Berliner Philharmoniker and founder of the most famous cello orchestra in the world: Die 12 Cellisten der Berliner Philharmoniker.
The workshop is addressed to cellists of any experience: pros, students and amateurs, and it aims to prepare and perform the biggest cello concert ever played in Italy, which will be performed twice, in Casalmaggiore and in Cremona.

“The art of the Tango”: (advanced workshop): Whether playing melody, comping, playing bass, harmonies, or rhythms, the Tango invites us to use the instrument and bow in new ways.

Natalie Haas “Scottish Fiddling for Cellists” (beginning workshop): What makes a tune sound Scottish? We’ll cover ornamentation, bowing, groove and using accents to create rhythmic excitement.

I am! When I found out that I could rent a cello instead of having to fly with mine, the rest was downhill. I'm really looking forward to it. I'm an ear player and I jam all the time with other acoustic instruments but so far almost never with another cello. This will be a new experience! And how could I pass up an opportunity to be in the same room with Alasdair and Natalie? I discovered the NDCA just after last year's festival.... and it was within DRIVING distance :(

As the time gets closer, perhaps someone would like to share a car? I'm currently planning on flying into the Sacramento airport Friday morning and renting something. Looks like flights from my neck of the woods arrive around 11:00 AM.
