Ten reasons to go to the next New Directions Cello Festival.

1. Meet family members you didn't know you had.
2. Learn that three hours sleep a night is fine if you are really having fun. Under three hours is pushing it.
3. Learn things you never knew existed.
4. Inspiring performances by guest artists.
5. Inspiring teaching by guest artists.
6. Great jams!
7. Learn your musical limitations and what to do about them.
8. Christine singing Motown.
9. Dinner for 8+ at the Moosewood.
10. Tom Culver playing funk tunes.

Chris and Sera - Thanks!

Going to Ithaca

Hi everyone! I'm Bruno, from São Paulo, Brazil. I'm going to the Festival this year and I'll be in New York City in June 2, 3 and 4. I'm looking for someone that can give me a ride to get there and/or to come back to NY in June, 7, so that I don't miss my flight back to Brazil in June, 8.

Otherwise I'm going by bus, that's probably a nice trip also! Greyhound is the bus company, right?

Thanks!!

Which airport to use to get to Ithaca for NDCF 2009?

Hi all, long time no chat...

I notice it would be about $200 cheaper to fly into Syracuse or Rochester, as opposed to Ithaca's airport. Any recommendations?

I'll be flying from Washington DC.

Talking about Jazz :"´round midnight" for cello solo

Dear New directions cellists,
I wanted to share with you the first part of my project of a cello solo suite based, instead of on centuries old dances, on jazz standards.
I am right now in the process of recording it and I would very much welcome any feedback, comment about it.

A very creative day to all of you.

Playing by Ear!

Please point me in the correct direction. My 16 year old son picked up the cello 2 weeks ago and started playing. He learned Bach's Cello Suite 1 prelude last night. There are still a few parts he is perfecting but can play it beautifully in its entirety. I am not making this up or exagerating. He cannot read music well but he took the sheet music, listened to Yo-Yo Ma on Youtube and figured out the notes. He does not really need the sheet music because all he needs to do is listen to the music.I think it is the most amazing thing I have ever seen not to mention our house sounds beautiful.

Is there some direction I should take him with this talent. Any recommendations would be helpful.

traveling with cello

hi all

bad developments on the travel front. Seems now that the airlines can compete on published prices, and then nail you on the fees for food, blankets and baggage. I've been flying for years and suddenly United wants me to pay $125 to check my cello as baggage. US Airways has VERY ambiguous rules that might cost us $150 per flight. I've even been forced to purchase a seat for my cello on US, upon arrival at the airport. Northwest now charges $100, and Southwest $50.

If this matters to you, PLEASE write a letter to one or more airlines that you tend to use. I have written to United and US Airways, and I think if they receive dozens of letters about starving artists and supporting the arts, they might relent.
