NDCA General Forum

WOW, what a weekend!

Hi all,

Well, I'm back in good old Michigan with about 12 hours sleep between three time zones and three days. But I'm still buzzing and I don't feel sleep deprived at all. I know it's gonna hit me eventually, but who cares. Of course I have this job interview in about 45 minutes.....

I'll put together a full set of impressions when I re-group but suffice it to say this was a life changing event for me. I went into overload, stayed there for much of it, learned lots of stuff, made lots of recordings, took lots of photos and tried to soak up as much as I could hold.

Thanks to Chris and everyone that put the festival together.

Transportation to/from Festival and Airport

This information was promised and it has yet to be posted. Please put this up ASAP.

Any L&C CF cellos coming to the NDCF?

Title says all. I am most curious how these sound but I have not met one yet.

Just a week off.... getting excited!

9 Year Old cellist

My son is 9 and has been playing the cello since last January ( 1 year and 3 months). He is progressing quickly and is currently in the middle of book 3 in the Suzuki series. He wants to learn jazz cello. Does any one know of someone who would work with a child in the Denver metro area?

Thanks.

ND Festival Question

Hi Everyone!
I'm new to this forum and will be attending my first New Directions Cello Festival in Sacramento. I'm really looking forward to it, and particularly to the workshops. I'm curious about the jam sessions, though. Are they open to everyone, and are they just for cellos? I play guitar and tenor banjo, as well as cello, and was wondering if I should bring them along. Are there informal jams going on in the dorms? I would love to know what to expect from any of you who have been before.
Thanks!
Debby
P.S. I've really enjoyed reading the postings from other "folky" cellists.

Lessons for a beginner?

Let me apologize ahead of time for the basic question, and potentially taking some of you off your intentded topic.

I am a "green as grass" beginner that wants to learn to play the cello. I don't read music and would need to start from first principles..........from the beginning of the beginning.

Question:
Can anyone point me in the direction of a beginner's cello class in the Detroit/Oakland County area?

I live near the intersection of the 75 and 696 freeways in Michigan.

Intonation

Hi all,

There is a thread over on another BBS about taping the fingerboard and intonation. It got me thinking.... I was going to join that thread but then decided this BBS is a better place for the kind of discussion I am interested in. Bear with me.....

I'm 100% an ear player. Before I took up the cello I had lots of experience with other fixed pitch instruments in informal jam sessions as well as alone. As I gianed experience on them, I also found that my ear was being trained. I clearly remember a quantum leap when I got my first tuning machine in about 1980 and started using it as a "pitch referee" while tuning (used to use a pitch pipe). These days I have fairly good relative pitch. I can often identify a key by just hearing a tune, and I can often hear very small intonation errors of 2-5 cents.

Does anyone have experience with css?

I'm trying to get the primary links at the top to line up with the header. Can anyone help?

Board Postings Layout

The postings on this board are presented in a nested form by reply-to source, rather than by time-of-response as is more common on other boards. There isn't a very clear distinction between unread replies and those already seen. Therefore one has to scan backwards and forwards to find the new postings.

Could we either (a) present new postings in a different colour or font, or (b) use the more normal time-of-posting ordering, or both, or some similar alternative. Ideally, how the information is presented could be a settable option for a logged-in user. Guests would get a standard order.
